SPOT is happy now, and living in a flat near you. Canny developers began building pet-friendly blocks about 20 years ago because they realised the sums didnt add up: more than 60 per cent of Australians own pets; more and more Australians are choosing to live in flats; but most flats prohibit pets.

Kiwis spend a fortune on pets

Kiwis fork out $1.6 billion a year on their pooches, moggies and assorted pets and not just for Champ and Whiskas and the odd flea treatment.

More than ever pets are part of the family, with caring owners increasingly shelling out for human products and services, such as insurance, deli treats, day care, a new duffel coat for winter, and a haircut and blow dry every six weeks.

It seems being in the doghouse never looked so good.

These school holidays cat and dog owners heading out of town will call on pet feeding services which can cost $8 to $17 a meal, or drop their four-legged friends off at catteries and kennels, which, depending on location and luxury levels, can cost between $14 and $50 a day.

Boarding and day care services account for $75 million, or 5 per cent of the total $1.6b spent on companion animals a year, according to a report last year by the Companion Animal Council.

The report estimates the average annual expenditure for a cat at $466; for a dog, $1047.

Petone pet lover Amie McCarron reckons those figures are a bit light.

The artist has two king charles cavalier and cocker spaniel crosses Sasha and Ollie and two cats, burmilla Max and a burmese called Lily.

She spends about $200 on premium petfood for them every six weeks, and roughly $160 a year per pet on routine vet visits.

Not so routine vet visits for Lilys hip joint replacement and to have Sashas stomach pumped after she ate panadol have cost up to $800 each.

Sasha and Ollie are professionally groomed four times a year at $70 per dog per visit, and the pooches have jumpers and raincoats for wintry weather.

I did actually buy proper dog boots for Sasha for when we go camping, as she tends to run until her feet bleed.

I sometimes think about working [all the costs] out, but it scares me.

Getting a pet in the first place requires more than small change.

Adopting a kitten at Wellingtons SPCA costs $75 or $175, depending on its age, and a puppy costs $195 or $295.

Fees include the cost of desexing, microchipping, vaccinations and worm and flea treatments.

Pet chain Animates has only SPCA kittens for adoption, for $179; SPCA puppies are $595.

Marketing manager Jacqui Baigent says those prices include a range of services such as a donation to the SPCA, and the costs of a vet check, desexing, vaccinations including additional required vaccinations for puppies microchipping, one months pet insurance, flea and worm treatment, food vouchers, and a 30-minute introductory training session for puppies.

Dear Daisy Dog: My veterinarian thinks my dog, Rusty, has a food allergy. She recommends we try a prescription venison and potato diet for three months, to see if he improves.

Her prescription diet is expensive, so Id like to buy a venison diet from the pet supply store. Wont that work just as well?

Daisy responds: Possibly not. A recently published study documented that some over-the-counter, or OTC, diets are contaminated with other proteins.

Researchers tested four OTC venison diets that claimed to contain no soy or beef: 1. Eukanuba Naturally Wild New Zealand Venison amp;amp; Potato, 2. Dick Van Pattans Natural Balance, 3. Natures Variety Prairie New Zealand Venison amp;amp; Millet and 4. Wellness Simple Food Solutions Rice amp;amp; Venison.

The first three tested positive for soy, a common food allergen. In addition, diet 2 contained beef, another common allergen, even though beef isnt listed on the label.

To avoid OTC food, ask your veterinarian about putting Rusty on a home-cooked diet. Dont buy ground venison, because ground meat often contains bits of other meats processed earlier.

Your home-cooked diet should contain one part venison to two parts potato or other carbohydrate Rusty has never eaten. Feed a daily total of about 1 cup per 10 pounds of body weight.

Offer nothing else but water during Rustys three-month diet trial.

Dear Christopher Cat: Puss in Boots, my 10-year-old cat, sees a country veterinarian for his yearly exam and vaccinations. I love this vet because hes gentle and kind, but he doesnt suggest the lab work my friends veterinarians recommend. Should Puss have periodic lab work, and if so, what tests should I request?

Christopher responds: Your question is important, and Id suggest you ask it of your veterinarian.

Along with a physical exam and information on how Puss is doing (called the history), lab work is an important tool in identifying medical problems early, so they can be treated before they cause lethargy, pain, organ damage or premature death.

Most veterinarians recommend fecal testing to detect parasites that can infect even indoor cats – and the humans who live with them.

Mom tests my blood to rule out anemia, kidney disease, liver problems, an overactive thyroid gland and many other disorders. These tests are referred to as a complete blood count, chemistry profile and T4 thyroid level.

In addition to blood tests, you should request a urinalysis, which can identify kidney and bladder diseases, such as infection.

Many veterinarians also recommend the proBNP test for heart disease, because the most common feline heart problem, cardiomyopathy, usually isnt discovered during a physical exam.
